LMS 5MT No.45212 “Black 5”

A mixed-traffic locomotive designed by Sir William Stanier in 1934 ‘Black 5’s, as they are known by enthusiasts. Around 842 “Black 5” engines have been built by 1951. This “Black 5” was numbered 5212 by the LMS and produced by Armstrong Whitworth at their works in Newcastle in 1935. The engine gained the British Railways number 45212 after nationalisation.

The locomotive has now been the subject of a rebuild to mainline condition. This is thanks to a unique agreement. Between the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway and the Bury-based engineering company Riley & Son (E) Ltd. As part of a ten year agreement, 45212 has undergone a major overhaul to allow it to operate on main line specials.

Lms 5MT No.45212 seen below running on The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, during a cold & sunny winters day. This was slightly special as the engine was facing North, which is classed as the wrong way round for this railway.
